Local Electronics Servicing
for the Gear You Love Most

Hi, I'm Dylan, an independent electronics technician specializing in pre-2010s game consoles & computers. Hardware faults, software issues, homebrewing, and everything in between.

PlayStation 1 · 2 · 3 Nintendo 64 · GameCube · Wii Game Boy Family Windows & Mac PCs Xbox · Xbox 360 Sega Systems

One Technician

I'm Dylan, a self-employed electronics technician operating out of Haverhill, MA. I've spent years digging into the hardware and software of retro game consoles and computers. What a good chunk of mainstream shops won't touch, or your uncle says is "super old, man", I can probably service.

My primary specialty is pre-2010s game consoles and computers of all makes and models, with a particular sub-specialty in Sony (PlayStation family) and Nintendo systems. Whether you've got a PS3 with no video output, a seemingly bricked 3DS, or a PC that won't boot, I'll take a look at it.

I try to keep things simple. I believe less in profit than I do treating you, the customer, ethically and like a good friend. You'll always know exactly what's wrong with your machine and exactly what your options are before we ever do a thing with it.

  • Hardware fault diagnosis & repair
  • Software troubleshooting & restoration
  • Sony PlayStation 1, 2 & 3 - sub-specialty
  • Nintendo 64, GameCube, DS, Wii - sub-specialty
  • Console homebrewing at flat rates

The Process, Step by Step

Call Me Up

Pick up the phone and give me a ring at (617) 652-0657. We'll talk through your problem, no technical knowledge required on your end. Tell me what your machine is doing (or not doing), and we'll go from there.

Drop Off Your Machine

Bring your console or computer to Vidcomp (163 Washington St, Haverhill). I'll take it in for a 3-day assessment period at no charge to you yet. During that time I'll look at it from every angle: the quickest fix, the most thorough fix, the cheapest option, and everything in between.

You Get Your Options

After the assessment, I'll contact you by your preferred method and tell you exactly what's wrong, and walk you through each repair option with clear pricing.

We Agree, I Get to Work

You choose the option that works best for you. I'll send a repair agreement to your email, you sign off, and I get started. If you decide not to proceed after the assessment, there's a flat $15 diagnostic fee. If you do proceed, that fee is completely waived.

No-repair diagnostic fee: $15 flat. Waived entirely if you proceed.

Transparent, Itemized Billing

Once the repair is complete, you'll receive an invoice by email. It includes an itemized breakdown of every cost: parts and the service category fee, along with a clear explanation of why your repair fell into that category. You will know exactly what each dollar you're spending went to.

Pay & Pick Up Your Machine

Once the invoice is paid, your machine is ready for pickup at Vidcomp (163 Washington St, Haverhill, MA 01832).

No Surprises.

Costs are determined by repair category and always disclosed in full before work begins. Your invoice will show exactly what costs what, and why.

Assessment

FREE
3-day diagnostic period

Every repair starts with a thorough assessment at no initial cost. You only pay if you decline to proceed.

Repairs

Tiered
Based on repair category

Service fee is based on the category of repair. Always explained, always itemized on your invoice alongside parts.

If you choose not to proceed after assessment: There's a flat $15 diagnostic fee. If you do proceed with the repair, that $15 is waived entirely. You pay the cost of parts and the repair category fee. Everything is broken out on your invoice.

How Repairs Are Priced

Every repair is assigned a category once the work is complete. The category is decided by the nature and complexity of the actual repair performed. Each category has a fixed service fee range that it will never go above or below. Parts are always billed separately at cost, on top of the category fee.

Category assigned after repair. You won't be quoted a category number upfront, you'll be given an estimate for a fee range based on what the repair looks like. The final category is assigned when the work is done and will always be explained on your invoice.
You're always informed. If your repair looks like one category at first, but its discovered to be a different or more expensive category later, I will always inform you first, let you know the new estimated price range, and get your permission to continue with the repair. You won't be surprised with a new higher cost.
One category per repair. If a repair touches more than one category, for example, a component swap that also requires resoldering a broken port, only the higher category is charged. You will never be billed two category fees for the same repair visit.
Fixed ranges, no exceptions. The fee for a Category 2 repair will always fall between $35 and $80. A Category 4 repair will always fall between $140 and $200. These ranges do not flex based on the device brand, age, or how long it took me.
You pay for parts. You pay for the parts ordered in the repair, plus a 20% markup.
